INCONSISTENCY, shocking away form and individual errors were the key factors in another poor season at the Showgrounds, in Tommy Wright's second season in charge. Ballymena United finished ninth in the table, a disappointing return for a season that promised much more. An opening day win against Glenavon was one of the few high points in a poor first half of the season, as the Braid faithful had to wait until December for that elusive first away victory. The second half of the league campaign was much more promising as deserved victories over Glentoran, Dungannon and Portadown at the Showgrounds showed the potential of this team. The Irish Cup caused one of the biggest controversies of the season, as after defeating HW Welders and Comber Rec. the sky blues drew 1-1 with Linfield in the quarter-finals. The Blues refused to play the replay the following week, and after a host of meetings and appeals the replay finally took place a month later than scheduled. Ballymena cruelly lost 4-2 after being 2-1 ahead at Windsor Park. There were embarrassing returns from the other two cup competitions as Ballymena finished bottom of their League Cup group and were humbled by Dundela in the first round of the County Antrim Shield. Paul Murphy made the most appearances of the United players, in his first season at Warden Street, with 41 games played. Kevin Kelbie finished top goalscorer with 17 goals.
