ONLY the Seaview crossbar prevented Tommy Wright bringing the County Antrim Shield to Warden Street in his first season as United manager. Ballymena were just inches away from beating Linfield, as Kevin Kelbie's strike rattled the woodwork with the scorelocked at 1-1 in the Shield final. Linfield, however, went on to win the second of their four trophy haul on a rainy night in North Belfast. Despite a slow start, United's league form kicked into action over the Christmas period, as only one defeat in eleven games between December and February seen the Sky Blues fly up the table, mainly thanks to the goals of Kevin Kelbie and Vinny Sweeney. A fantastic last-minute win at the Oval, saw ex-Glenman Kelbie score against his former employers. Along with a win against Coleraine on Boxing Day, United looked good for a high finish in the league, but after a post-Shield-final-slump, the Skies slipped down to 7th in the Carnegie Premier League. The Irish Cup provided no solace for Ballymena United, as Lisburn Distillery knocked Wright's side out after a 6th Round replay. The League Cup was just as uneventful, as they narrowly missed out on qualification from the group stage. Kevin Kelbie finished top scorer in his first season at the club, hitting a hot streak after Christmas to bag 16 goals. Gary Haveron made the most appearances competing in all Ballymena's games - for a total of 43 (3 of which were substitute appearances).
