AN ultimately disappointing season at Warden Street in the Sky Blues' second season in Premier League football, which cost Alan Fraser his job. Fraser was sacked after the final league game against Glentoran, after four seasons in charge at the Braid. The Irish Cup semi-final defeat to Portadown, seemingly, the deciding factor. To make things worse for Fraser, that game was effectively the final as Cliftonville were disqualified and Portadown took the cup, the prize money and the place in the Europe for the following season. A sixth place league finish seen United well off the pace, frustratingly though they struggled for consistency but managed some major scalps in the League; twice beating Linfield for example. For the second year running Ballymena lost out in the final of the Irish News Cup, this time to Finn Harps. All the other cup competitions bar the Irish Cup, provided little success as United marked ten seasons without a major trophy. Glenn Hunter finally found his feet at the Showgrounds and finished top goalscorer with 19 goals (12 in the league) and Mark Carlisle made the most appearances with a remarkable 51 games to his name.
