THE 1993/1994 season won't live long in the memory of Ballymena United supporters, as the Sky Blues suffered a disastrous season. This season combined with the following campaign, would determine qualification for the newly established Premier and First Divisions. However, after a dismal 11th place finish - United gave themselves an uphill challenge for the next season. Jim Hagan was sacked in October 1993, and replaced by Tommy Jackson. He flirted with being a new messiah after winning his first game against former club, Glentoran, 3-2 at the Showgrounds - however he followed that up with 3 wins in the next twenty-six games! The cup competitions proved to be no consolation, as they only managed to get past the first stage of one of the six cup competitions entered; as they bowed out to Linfield in the quarter-finals of the Ulster Cup. Humiliating defeats to Carrick Rangers in the Irish Cup and Tobermore United in the League Cup summed up a miserable season at the Braid. Both Mark Carlisle and Johnny Speak only missed one game each, to finish the season with 40 appearances, and Speak also finished the top goalscorer at the club with 13 strikes.
