BALLYMENA United again flattered to decieve as inconsistency ravaged another frustrating season at the Warden Street Showgrounds. A second successive tenth place finish in the Irish League simply wasn't deemed acceptable by the supporters' standards, one of few highlights being a stunning 4-1 win at the Oval over Glentoran - however revenge was a dished served up in the return fixture when an embarrassing 8-2 defeat summed Ballymena's season up in a nutshell. Jim Hagan's side did reach the final of the Coca-Cola Floodlit Cup, only to be comfortably beaten 3-1 by title-chasing Portadown at Windsor Park. There was also semi-final and quarter-final appearances in the Gold Cup and League Cup, respectively. Both also embarrassing early exits from the Ulster Cup and County Antrim Shield. The Irish Cup raised hopes sky high after a 3-0 destruction of holders, Glenavon, but United's nine men were unceremoniously dumped out in the following round in front of a huge travelling support at Solitude, by Cliftonville. Scottish born, Neil Candlish finished top goalscorer on 16 goals - the striker moved to Glentoran for £25,000 soon after the season had finished. Defender Mark Carlisle played every game (48) in his first season at the Showgrounds, to be the top appearance maker.
