minute-by-minute  |  profileinterview

Interview taken from 'Sky Blue Review'; Ballymena United's match-day programme on 29/10/05 against Linfield. Interview conducted by Paul Irwin.

How did you get started in football? "The manager of Killyleagh initially attracted me to play in their Under-10's. I spent a few years with them before joining Lisburn Youth for 2 years, and then moving on to play for Ards, from where I joined Ballymena United."

Who have been your influences, both on and off the pitch? "In the time I spent with Ards, Soupy Campbell taught me a lot, and he has been invaluable in furthering mu football career. My parents have also been with me all the way, taking me everywhere I needed to go from day one when Paul Sharvin asked me to play for Killyleagh."

What do you think of the squad at BUFC? "On paper we have one of the best squads in the league and we should be up challenging with the top four teams. Hopefully last Saturday's display against Armagh City will get us going along the right path."

What are your initial thoughts on Tommy Wright? "My first impressions of Tommy are that he is a great manager. He has a lot of tactical knowledge and is good at sharing it with the players, and he gets on with everyone at the club."

What do you think of the setup of the club? "Ballymena United as a whole club is first class, one of the best in the league. A player couldn't ask for any more than the standard of facilities at the Showgrounds."

What do you think could be done to improve Irish League football and its attendances? "I think playing games on a Friday night or Sundays could improve the attendances at matches. The Irish League has too much competition both from people playing for amateur leagues and people watching English or Scottish matches on TV."

Which grounds/opponents have impressed you in the Irish League? "Portadown have always impressed me as they always have a very strong first eleven. Having played them several times this year I also think Newry are a strong outfit and could finish in the top six, and their ground is also impressive."

Have you any pre-match rituals or superstitions? "Nope, I just get on with it and get stuck in."

What are your ambitions for this season? "After a shaky start to the season, I'd like to finish in the top 6 or 7 teams."

What is your preferred Ballymena United kit? "The away one - it fit's better."

Are you married, or otherwise attached? "Otherwise attached!"

How do you like to unwind? "I play a bit of golf around the Downpatrick area, not that I'm any good, and I like watching TV."

Name your favourite current band/song? "U2."

Do you support any English football teams? "Everton, and we got a great result last week against Chelsea."

What is your favourite holiday destination? "Mallorca is unbelievable, the "sights" and the weather are fantastic."

Finally, If you were on a desert island; pick three things? "My girl, some drink and my mobile."
