THE SIGNING of midfielder Gavin Taggart from Amateur League football could prove to be Roy Walker's shrewdest signing of the summer.

The Belfast native spent the early part of his career in England with Peterbrough United but failed to break into the first team at London Road and also homesick - Gavin returned back to Northern Ireland.

After a spell out of football Taggart returned to football in the more basic surrounds of Newington YC in the Amateur League and spent just under four years at the North Belfast club impressing many with his industrious midfield performances.

Gavin's performances were not going unnoticed as he was the star performer for the Northern Ireland Junior International side last season and was linked with a number of other IFA Premiership sides before joining United in June 2009.

Despite never having played at this level; manager Roy Walker has high hopes and is confident that he has unearthed a potiential gem in Taggart.
