minute-by-minute  |  profileinterview

Interview taken from 'Sky Blue Review'; Ballymena United's match-day programme on 19/01/08 against Crusaders. Interview conducted by Bill Wray.

How did you get started in football?

"I played for Limavady Youths and Newtown Youths when I was younger. When I was 18 I broke into the first team setup and I haven't looked back since."

Who have been the influences on your career to date?

"Football runs in my family as my uncle Gerry Mullan used to play for Ballymena; he also played for in England for Everton for a few years. However the biggest influence has been my Dad. Even though he is a referee no, he played a bit and has always encouraged me to play."

How did you come to make the move from Limavady United to Ballymena United - Was it a hard decision?

"I was a very tough decision but Ballymena is a bigger club. I worked under Tommy before and that was a big factor in moving. Everyone has made me welcome now and I am enjoying it."

How have you found playing in the Premier League?

"I am enjoying it, it's tough and very physical but it's good to put yourself up against some of the best players in the country."

Have you a special fitness/training regime or do you stick to the club training schedule?

"No, I have no special training regimes. I would do two nights with Ballymena, sometimes I go to the gym depending on how long I've played on Saturday."

You were recently in the Irish Universities squad. How did you find that?

"It was the experience of a lifetime. The games were held in Thailand, we didn't do so well on the football side of things but I had an amazing time. There is another trip next year so hopefully I'll get away again.

Who have you found to be the best or toughest opponents that you have come up against?

"Definitely Linfield, in the CIS League Cup this year, they were a different class."

How do you think the season has gone so far from both a team and also a personal perspective?

"The season has been a bit of a rollercoaster, after our bad start no-one thought we would be sitting in fourth at this stage. Hopefully we can stay there until the end of the season. On a personal level I was glad to get a run of games the last few months, it's what I needed and hopefully I can get a few more goals along the way."

What other sports or hobbies are you into?

"Nothing really, if I'm not playing football I'm watching it on TV."

What are your best moments in your career so far?

"I'm only young and haven't achieved anything as regards silverware, I enjoyed my first season at Limavady United where I scored a few goals, but I moved to Ballymena to win trophies and with the squad we have now there's no reason why that can't happen."

Finally, what hopes and aspirations do you have for your football career?

"I'm enjoying the way everything is going at the minute, but I want to be successful and enjoy playing football so wherever that turns out to be I'll be happy.
