minute-by-minute  |  profileinterview

Interview taken from 'Sky Blue Review'; Ballymena United's match-day programme on 05/11/06 against Dungannon Swifts. Interview conducted by Paul Irwin.

How did you get started in football? "I first started playing with friends in my local team in Stirling, and got my break when I signed for Celtic. I was there for around three years, which helped a lot with the development of my game, before having spells with both Rangers and Alloa. I spent some time working in America before returning to Scotland, then got a job offer in Belfast which is how I ended up playing for Ballymena United, after pre-season training with Glentoran."

Who have been your influences, both on and off the pitch? "Ex-Hearts player Scott Crabbe was a great influence, seeing him win a Young Player of the Year award inspired me, and I also learnt a lot from him when I played with him at Alloa Athletic. Probably my biggest influences have been Hugh McCann, who is currently coaching the Under-19 squad at Alloa, and my parents, who have supported me all the way."

What do you think of the squad at BUFC? "There is a really good squad at Ballymena, the ability is certainly there to be challenging the top sides."

What are your initial thoughts on Tommy Wright? "It's hard for a new manager bringing in a lot of new players to build a strong squad when football fans have high expectations and want to see their team win every match. It'll take a while for the squad to get to know each other's strengths and playing styles, but Tommy has faith in his players to steadily improve and produce the goods on the pitch."

What do you think of the setup of the club? "The facilities are one of the best in Irish League football, the floodlit pitch behind the homestand is superb for training and the main pitch is currently in excellent condition. The youth setup at the club is currently bearing fruit, with the reserves being one of the best teams in their league and several reserve players knocking on the door of the first team."

What do you think could be done to improve Irish League football and its attendances? "I think full-time football is definitely on the cards - Linfield and Glentoran have both recently taken the step forward employing young full-time players, and all other teams will have to follow suit or risk falling further behind 'The Big Two'. As more clubs turn full-time the quality of the football will improve and, with good marketing, the crowds should start improving."

Which grounds/opponents have impressed you in the Irish League? "I haven't been to all the grounds yet, but from what I've see the Oval is a very good pitch, I'm looking forward to playing on it against them."

Have you any pre-match rituals or superstitions? "Not really, just have a quiet night before a match and eat the right foods."

What are your ambitions for this season? "Coming from a settled team into a squad with so many new faces makes it harder to adapt so I want to gain a regular slot in the first team, improve my confidence and help the team settle into a strong side."

What is your preferred Ballymena United kit? "I think the white away top looks class!"

Are you married, or otherwise attached? "No, I'm single and loving it."

How do you like to unwind? "I like to go out a Saturday night with my mates, usually heading into Belfast for a look at the talent."

Name your favourite current band/song? "I usually listen to the radio as I like most recent music, and I can often be found tapping my feet to Mr Blobby."

Do you support any English football teams? "Manchester United, of course."

What is your favourite holiday destination? "Magaluf, the beaches are nice."

Finally, If you were on a desert island; pick three things? "My mobile phone, a woman and some drink."
