CALLAGHAN SIGNS FOR DERRY CITY
(Thursday, 17th January, 2008)

DEFENDER Aaron Callaghan has finally moved away from the Showgrounds, after being transferred to hometown side, Derry City, for an undisclosed fee.

The saga began at Christmas time, when Callaghan, turned his back on the Sky Blues after verbally agreeing to sign a new contract extension at Warden Street – instead seeking full-time football in the League of Ireland.

Despite strong interest from Finn Harps it was Derry City that took the advantage, and yesterday the full-back signed a two-year deal at the Brandywell; making him Stephen Kenny’s first signing in his second spell at the Maiden City.

Callaghan began his career at Sheffield Wednesday, before returning home to Limavady United in 2004. After two years at the Roeside, he joined former boss Tommy Wright at Ballymena United in July 2006 and made 52 appearances for the Sky Blues, scoring just the one goal.

He is also the current right-back for the Northern Ireland Under-21 side, and also appeared for the Northern Ireland select side in the summer against Everton as part of the Milk Cup’s 25th anniversary celebrations.

Another player leaving is reserve team midfielder, Dominic Melly, who has spent the last year on loan at First Division, Bangor. His six-month loan deal was due to expire, but he has now joined the Seasiders on a free transfer.
