BALLYMENA UNITED THIRDS 2-1 NEWRY CITY COLTS
(Thursday, 27th October, 2011; IFA Youth League Section B - 7)

MELVYN Logan's Ballymena United Thirds returned to the top of Section B of the IFA Youth League after a dramatic late win over second placed Newry City Colts.

This was a closely contested match as Newry started bright and put Ballymena on the back foot but couldn't get an early advantage.

As the half progressed Ballymena played their way into the game and John McKee down the right was causing Newry problems and was unlucky when his shot hit the side netting.

Neil Lowry hit a shot just over the bar and just before half time Eoghan McIlhinney had his header well save.

The second half saw Ballymena carry on where they left of in the first half but they couldn;t find a way through a well organised Newry defence.

The opening goal came 15 minutes into the second half when a long ball wasn't dealt with and the forward ran in to fire home.

Balllymena pushed hard to get back into the game and it was Eoin Gillan who got the equaliser when the ball fell to him inside the box to give the keeper no chance.

Gavin Kernohan (pictured) got the winner just as it looked like the match was heading for a draw.
