BALLYMENA United grinded out a hard fought pre-season victory over neighbours Raceview in Broughshane this evening.

Roy Walker fielded a full strength United side for this game as he looks to finalise his plans for the start of the domestic season which is now just over a week away.

It was the Sky Blues who started brightly with the in-form Nathan McConnell forcing the goalkeeper into a save before Andy Smith also came close with a near-post effort that also forced a quick reaction from the home custodian.

Recent signing Ormo Okunayia was again looking lively when he crossed for Lee Colligan, who seen his header tipped over. Ormo did open the scoring himself on 16 minutes when he cut in from the right flank and drilled an unstoppable low shot past the 'keeper.

Despite going a goal down Raceview kept the pressure on United and restricted Roy Walker's side to few chances, the best chance of the remaining half hour of the period falling to Paul Muir.

The manager made four changes at the interval including trialist Kyle Alexander and also midfielder Noel Anderson - who was to make an almost instant impact when he scored United's second on 52 minutes.

Four minutes later Raceview pulled themselves back into the game when a defensive mix up between Michael Smith and Kyle Alexander allowed striker Gareth Mott to fire an unstoppable drive past Sean O'Neill in the United goal.

Ballymena United restored their two goal lead on 72 minutes when some great footwork by Okunayia on the left produced a superb cross which allowed Nathan McConnell the easiest of tap-in's for his fifth goal in five games.

Noel Anderson finished the match off with arguably the goal of the game, as he controlled a long ball superbly taking the ball on his right foot past the defender before finishing well with his left in a crowded penalty area.

Raceview substitute Matt Boyd nearly scored a late consolation goal for his side when his audacious long range effort forced a reflex save from the visiting goalkeeper.

Overall, a good workout for United against a well organised Raceview side; the Sky Blues will play their penultimate pre-season friendly on Saturday at the club's Open Day against English side Croydon Athletic.
