BALLYMENA United bounced back from their weekend defeat to Coventry with a deserved 1-0 victory over Tobermore United.

A strong United line-up seen Gary Haveron return to the starting line-up, as the rest of the United squad kicked off another friendly against Moyola Park, down the road in Castledawson.

The Sky Blues took the game to Tobermore from the start and created most of the chances in the first 15 minutes; with both Paul Brown and Darren Fitzgerald firing just wide.

Aidan Watson squandered a great chance with a quarter of an hour on the clock, as some fantastic football allowed Craig McClean to cross the ball in from the left - and Watson dragged his shot wide of the post.

However, the best chance of the half fell to the lively Paul Brown, who headed over from close range, after Mark Picking had delievered a great cross into the box.

The home side's first real chance came just on the stroke of half-time when Chris Leacock fired a dangerous looking free-kick, but Murphy dealt with it calmly.

Tobermore managed to creep back into the game in the second half but the first chance fell to a Simon Kelly who came close with a free kick from long range.

It was the Dundalk man who found himself on the other side of refree Paddy McFadden on 57 minutes, when he was yellow carded for arguing a decision for Tobermore.

Davitt Walsh came on in the 64th minute, for his debut after his loan move from Bohemians was sealed. The young Donegal striker looked lively after coming on for the ineffective Fitzgerald.

With 67 minutes on the clock, Gavin Melaugh had a rasping shot tipped over, but the resulting corner from Picking was headed goalwards by Haveron and knocked into the back of the net by Paul Brown for his first goal of pre-season.

This killed the game off as a contest, and as United pushed for a second - Tobermore had a number of half-chances put poor finishing meant a return to winning ways for the Sky Blues.
